Membership

Responsible church membership begins with a commitment of one’s life to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. That commitment to Christ is nurtured through participation in the church, Christ’s Body. Church membership is the formal, public commitment by an individual to the ministry and work of a local congregation.

What does it mean to be a “member” of St. John Lutheran Church?  Being a member of a church isn’t just about giving a donation and having your name on a roster.  It’s about supporting your brothers and sisters, holding each other accountable, regularly receiving God’s Word and Sacraments together, and working side by side to share the love of Jesus with our community

Responsible church membership begins with a commitment of one’s life to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  That commitment to Christ is nurtured through participation in the church, Christ’s Body (I Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4).  Church membership is the formal, public commitment by an individual to the ministry and work of a local congregation.

Responsibilities of a member of St. John Lutheran Church:

  • Believe and confess the Old and New Testaments to be God’s Word and only rule and standard of faith and life.  And accept the teachings of the Lutheran Church insofar as they conform to the Word of God.
  • Actively participate in worship at St. John.  Worship is the primary work of God’s people where He brings His gifts of Word and Sacrament to nurture and sustain faith.  Regular participation in worship is vital, not only for the benefit of the individual but also for the benefit of all members.
  • Give financially, as faithful stewards, to the work of St. John to fund ongoing ministries of the church, support a decent living for staff, and maintain property and resources.
  • Be accountable and committed to the people of St. John and its work and ministry together.  As a member, we commit to help each other grow spiritually and lead Godly lives, give and receive care in times of need, and seek reconciliation when there is conflict.
  • Discover and use our God-given talents to serve each other and the community and give witness to all people of the saving work of Jesus Christ.

Ultimately, being part of a church is God’s way of nurturing each of us and helping each of us live out our Christians lives together as a unified team.  We are better and stronger together than on our own.
