Martin Luther Study

null
Nearly 500 years ago, an unknown monk from a backwater town in Germany,
set in motion a movement that would literally transform Western civilization.

Martin Luther's Spirit-inspired grasp of justification through faith was the cornerstone of the Reformation. His faith - tested and tried by the fires of religious oppression - remain a standard of Christ-centered endurance for believers today. Learn more about the German reformer in this video-based study from Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Volunteer for Hearts and Hands

null
On Sunday, we were reminded of the importance of Solus Christus or Christ Alone. Our salvation is in Christ- not in anything that we do. When we love and serve others, however, we point to Christ who first loved and served us.
Last month, St. John forged a partnership with Hearts and Hands, a non-profit organization serving elderly and disabled adults in WNY by means of volunteers. Hearts and Hands is new to Niagara County and their partnership with St. John, officially, brought them to Wheatfield.
Volunteering for Hearts and Hands is an easy and non-threatening way to demonstrate the love of Christ. A care receiver is linked with a volunteer care giver to complete a specific task. That might be a ride to the doctor or grocery store, a friendly visit, or help with a household task. Whether you can help a neighbor once a week, once a month, or once a year- there’s an opportunity for everyone!
This Fall, we’ll be holding a 1.5 hour training at St. John for Hearts and Hands volunteers. The training is will adequately prepare volunteers for an excellent volunteer experience. We’d love for you to join us. First, complete your application (including your specific preferences) and background check (at no cost to you): https://hnhcares.org/volunteer/. Hearts and Hands boasts volunteering made easy. We like to think of it as loving made easy!
In Christ Alone,

SOLA: What Matters Most

Preaching Series October 2017

null

One of America’s post popular game shows is Family Feud. In it, contestants try to guess what answers people have given to surveys the show has conducted, with sometimes hilarious results. The surveys offer windows into what is at the top of the minds of the people they have surveyed.
As Christians, there are some things that should be at the top of our minds. In this series, we look at the things that matter most to our faith and should therefore be not only at the top of our minds, but deep in our hearts.
  • Solus Christus – Christ Alone - Oct. 1
  • Sola Gratia – Grace Alone - Oct. 8
  • Sola Fide – Faith Alone - Oct. 15
  • Sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone - Oct. 22
  • Sola Deo Gloria – To God’s Glory Alone - Oct. 29 (Special Reformation Service)

Thanks to Pastor Bill Tucker, Concordia Lutheran, San Antonio, Texas and the J2E3 Preaching Project for the materials and planning of this series.
